The Pakistani security forces thwarted a suicide attack by the terrorists who tried to attack a military post in the district of Wana in Lower South Waziristan with a bomb-laden vehicle on Thursday (July 16), Dawn and other Pakistani media reports said. No security personnel were killed, and four terrorists were killed. Clearance operations continue, and there is a high security presence on the ground. 

South Waziristan has historically been an area of great terrorism and extremism

A series of attacks has been witnessed in the previous Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA), especially in South Waziristan. The latest action is reminiscent of a massive terrorist attack on army-controlled Cadet College Wana in November 2025, when terrorists attempted to attack students and staff at the institution and were killed before they could do any damage.

In May this year, security forces thwarted yet another attempted bombing of a military post near Azam Warsak Bazaar that claimed the life of one civilian and injured 15 others. 

The Dawn report quoted Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICS) as claiming Pakistan’s security landscape turned gloomy and grim in May with a surge in terrorist attacks across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan. 

In addition, all security forces are engaged in the battle with multiple armed groups in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and Balochistan. The security forces of Pakistan, namely, the Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps, and police forces, have been killing many militants as part of the Operation Shaban, which has been focusing on the border regions of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the last few months beginning from early July. As reported, about 100 people have been killed in these operations.

Pakistan Taliban are a part of active terrorists and armed groups of the region

The most active and dangerous militant group operating in Waziristan is Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, or as it is called by the Pakistan government, Fitna al-Khawarij. The TTP or Pakistan Taliban, as it is also called, has been involved in various major attacks since the Taliban captured Afghanistan in 2021 and has been very active since 2024–2025.

There are splinter groups of the TTP as well, along with another group, Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP). They still take advantage of the rugged terrain and sanctuaries between the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.
