Ukrainian Air Defenses Intercept 79 Russian Drones During Massive Overnight Assault

The Armed Forces of Ukraine‘s Air Force on Friday reported that it has thwarted a massive drone attack at night. In total, the Russian military reported a coordinated attack with 90 unmanned aerial vechicles (UAVs) of a variety of types. These drones were launched from various locations in the Russian Federation, such as Bryansk, Orel and Primorsko-Akhtarsk regions as well as from the Gvardiyske area of the occupied Crimea.

Multi-Layered Defense Systems and Ongoing Aerial Threats

Ukrainian air defense forces managed to intercept and destroy (or jam) 79 drones in a well-coordinated operation. The extensive defensive operation was conducted in all parts of the Northern, Southern and Eastern part of the country. Successful interceptions were carried out with the use of a complex system of tactical aviation, anti-aircraft missile troops, as well as advanced electronic warfare means,” said the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine. Also in the attack’s repulsion, were specialized units of unmanned systems and highly mobile fire units on the ground.

Even with the military’s high interception rate, nine Russian drones were able to penetrate the defensive perimeter, and were able to strike their targets in eight areas. A security situation that is still extremely fluid and precarious throughout the region. The Government of Ukraine and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine’s latest joint update states that the Russian airstrikes are still ongoing and hostile drones continue to fly in the Ukrainian airspace.
