On 14th January, the government announced that it has closed the British embassy in Tehran, which has been closed on a temporary basis.
“The British Embassy in Tehran has temporarily closed and will now be operating remotely.” The government spokesperson has explained this consular change by stating that the Foreign Office travel advice has now changed.
The ambassador of Britain and the entire consular staff were evacuated following a security evaluation and the resolution to focus on the safety of the staff.
The relocation is amidst the leadership of Iran attempting to bring down the largest internal unrest ever experienced in the Islamic Republic, and with the United States President Donald Trump threatening to get involved.
Britain and the United States have recalled part of their staff from their bases in the Middle East following a senior Iranian official stating that Tehran had threatened its neighbours that it would attack American bases in case of a strike by Washington.
