Flights Halted as Massive Fire Erupts at Bangladesh’s Largest Airport

Flights from Bangladesh’s largest airport have been suspended following a major fire at the cargo terminal, officials confirmed.

Thirty-six fire units were fighting the fire on 18th October, Talha Bin Zasim, a Fire Service and Civil Defence Media Cell officer, reported.

Flight operations at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport were suspended, airport spokesman Masudul Hasan said, adding that all flights are safe.

It is unclear what caused the fire.

Domestic and international flights have been disrupted.

An IndiGo plane bound from Delhi to Dhaka was diverted to Kolkata, and an Air Arabia flight from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates was routed to Chittagong. A Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong was observed flying in circles in the air after it could not land at Dhaka airport, authorities said.

The army, navy, and air force were enlisted to assist the fire service in containing the blaze.

This is the third large fire to be reported in Bangladesh this week.

On Tuesday, a fire in a garment factory in Bangladesh and a nearby chemical warehouse killed at least 16 individuals and injured others.

On Thursday, another fire destroyed a garment factory building in an export processing area in Chittagong.
