A legendary mural of George Floyd was vandalized during the week in Minneapolis, say caretakers of his memorial.
Marcia Howard, an activist and teacher, shared a video on social media on 10th October
regarding the vandalism. It is a tray of cream paint on the floor beneath the mural with a portrait of George Floyd painted out.
“We’ve been trying to make this spot safe and sustainable and clean and sacred, so if you want to assist my friends and me in that endeavor… You know the drill,” Howard appealed to supporters.
The mural crowns the exterior of the remade grocery store, Unity Foods, at the intersection of 38th Street and Chicago Avenue, where Floyd breathed his last breaths.
Jeanelle Austin, a caretaker of the memorial there and executive director of George Floyd Global Memorial, said the vandalism could have occurred Tuesday night. Caretakers discovered it on Wednesday morning and set to work right away restoring the mural.
Austin reported that art conservators evaluated the damage and began cleaning on Thursday. One of the artists on the mural, Cadex Herrera, will repaint the mural with fresh paint.
