Earlier this month, the US conducted a major immigration raid. But authorities are currently preparing to send back more than 300 South Koreans home on a chartered flight from Georgia, it has been reported.
The dozens of South Koreans had been in detention after a raid at a Hyundai plant. The 316 people are going to be returning home, in addition to 14 employees of South Korean companies from other countries, such as China, Japan and Indonesia.
The sight of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) authorities handcuffing and chaining the skilled technicians from South Korea shocked a number of people back home. This situation is being closely monitored.
US agrees to 2 demands of South Korea
This high-profile immigration raid also threatened to halt South Korea’s contribution to US President Donald Trump’s plans to restore the manufacturing sector. South Korea is a leader in high-tech industries, including electric vehicles, batteries and semiconductors.
The charter flight’s departure from Georgia had to be delayed as US and South Korean officials discussed a number of terms of the technicians’ release. It has been reported that the US has agreed to a couple of South Korea’s demands.
The first one is that the South Koreans are to be shifted from a detention facility to the airport handcuffs-free. There should also be no other physical restraints. Second, the people should not face any problems in reentering the US in the future for professional reasons.
