Wang Huning Meets 149 Ethnic Minority Representatives in Beijing

Wang Huning, member of the Politburo Standing Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), on September 5, 2025, met in Beijing with 149 representatives of ethnic minority groups across China.

Wang praised the representatives’ contributions in his address during the meeting and urged them to take a leading role in promoting patriotism, guiding people of all ethnic backgrounds to follow the Party’s leadership, and reinforcing shared ideological and political values. He stressed on the consolidation of a common ideological foundation among all ethnic groups for united progress.

The need for intensified efforts was called by Wang to foster a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation, promote common prosperity among all ethnic groups, and enhance economic development and living standards in border areas where many ethnic minorities reside.

Among the 149 attendees were recognized role models for ethnic unity and progress honoured by the CPC Central Committee and the State Council in 2024, as well as descendants of individuals who made notable contributions in earlier eras.

This meeting involves a long-standing tradition of Wang Huning Holding sessions with minority representatives. For example:

  • He met with 150 representatives on September 29, 2023, to reaffirm the need for ethnic unity, communication, and high-quality development in minority regions.
  • Wang, on September 30, 2024, convened with role models for ethnic unity and progress, urging them to remain examples of patriotism and to help build a strong sense of national community and advance comprehensive reform and shared prosperity.

The key themes discussed across these meetings include strengthening ideological cohesion under the CPC, promoting prosperity and development in border and ethnic regions, and cultivating patriotic unity across China’s diverse population.

The continued emphasis by Chinese leadership on ethnic unity as a strategic component of national governance was underlined in this September 2025 session, particularly amidst modern challenges. The meeting bridges historical legacy with contemporary objectives, reinforcing the narrative of a continuous ethnic unity tradition by inviting both current role models and descendants of past contributors. The efforts that are taken align with broader aims to ensure that “no ethnic group is left behind” and to reinforce stability under a common national identity.
