Russia’s so-called brutal military operation in neighbouring Ukraine is often considered a critical catalyst for cooperation among Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. The US-based CNAS is calling this the “axis of upheaval”.
The increasing alignment among the four countries is capable of altering the geopolitical landscape, it has been reported. Bound by shared opposition to a US-led global order, this axis is gradually getting stronger and their coordination is also improving.
Just recently, Russia and China carried out a meticulous round of joint naval drills in the Sea of Japan. This is important as the move is particularly designed to reinforce the countries’ strategic partnership.
Seeking a global order that is far different from one seen today
It appears that Russia and China are deepening their collaboration – and that Iran and North Korea are tagging along. The axis mentioned in this article seeks a global order that is far different from the one seen in today’s generation.
This means the four countries are capable of significantly changing the geopolitical landscape for real. It is important that the US prepare a comprehensive response that is going to protect its interests, values and international arrangements, said Richard Fontaine of CNAS.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is also becoming a bigger thing in geopolitics. The 2025 SCO Summit is happening at China’s Tianjin later this month. It is of high significance as many members of the group are or had been engaged in conflicts and disruptions this year.
