Four Maoists were killed during an encounter with security forces this morning in the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh. The encounter occurred in the south-western region of the district. Security forces recovered the bodies of the deceased Maoists, along with a large amount of weapons (including a self-loading rifle SLR).
According to Hindustan Times, the four deceased were members of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist)’s South Sub Zonal Bureau. They had a cumulative reward of ₹17 lakh (₹5 lakh and ₹2.5 lakh for two men, and ₹5 lakh and ₹2.5 lakh for two women), as previously announced by the state government. Two of the deceased were women, reflecting the prominent position women take in the conducting of insurgency in this region.

How the Encounter Started
The Greater Bastar police said the gunfight began after security forces received intelligence that Maoists were in the area, and a joint task force was immediately dispatched on a search mission.
Since last night, there has been sporadic fire from the Maoists (Naxalites) in the area towards the security forces.
Area Is Under Search
Security services are continuing to search the encounter site, as well as forested areas in proximity, to check if it is safe and to root out any remaining threats.
